Park Introduction
The Wild Coast Geopark in Wanli District, New Taipei City, is Taiwan's first geopark. Covering an area of about 29 hectares, it is renowned for its unique coastal erosion landforms. After thousands of years of interaction between seawater and rocks, various oddly shaped rock formations have emerged, such as the Queen’s Head, mushroom rocks, elephant trunk rocks, and tofu rocks, attracting many visitors.
In addition to admiring the geological wonders, the park also has a comprehensive interpretive system. The visitor center provides guidebooks that detail the geological background of each featured site. There is also a geology museum which houses numerous exhibits related to geology, making it an excellent educational field trip destination. Strolling through the park allows visitors not only to appreciate nature's masterpieces but also to learn about earth science knowledge, making it a great place for both education and recreation.
Must-see attractions
Queen's head
Queen's Head is a representative landmark of Yehliu Geopark. The rock formation resembles the profile of Nefertiti, the Egyptian queen, graceful and noble, hence its name. Queen's Head was formed by differential erosion. The softer parts were eroded by sea wind and waves while the harder parts remained. After weathering through the ages, admiring it from different angles reveals fascinating changes in light and shadow.
Mushroom-shaped rock
Stalagmite rocks are a series of sandstone and shale formations that resemble blooming mushrooms. This unique mushroom-shaped structure formed over 200 million years ago during the Miocene epoch. Through weathering and erosion, the hard sandstone became the "umbrella" while the more porous shale formed the "stem," creating a distinct contrast in appearance and presenting a unique natural landscape.
Elephant Trunk Rock
The natural artistry of nature has made this rock look like an elephant's trunk, hence its name, Elephant Trunk Rock. Its different resistance to weathering led to its present appearance. However, recently the "Elephant Trunk Rock" nose was broken off by waves, leaving only the body.
Tofu rock
As its name suggests, Tofu Rock's appearance resembles a block of tofu, with its surface covered in numerous holes. Its texture appears soft but can withstand the test of strong winds and waves. It is formed from sandstone and shell debris deposition, with the holes resulting from calcite dissolution. Observing Tofu Rock offers a glimpse into the underwater world millions of years ago.
Besides the aforementioned famous landmarks, Yehliu Geopark also boasts numerous unique rock formations, such as sea erosion grooves, honeycomb rocks, and candle-rock. Each spot is worth taking a moment to appreciate. The park also offers rich guided tours that, through geological knowledge, allow you to better understand the preciousness of this land.
